Yes, you can watch live TV for free in Belgium, and legally: Auvio, RTL play and VRT MAX stream their channels with no subscription, and an aerial picks up three RTBF channels in Wallonia and Brussels. Sport and films remain paid. And IPTV at €10 a year is not an option, it is an offence.
Which channels can you watch for free and legally in Belgium?
The public channels, those of RTL and DPG Media, and almost nothing else.
Everything depends on two things: your region and your connection. Without internet, the only free television in the country is the aerial service of RTBF, the French-speaking public broadcaster, and it stops at the language border. With internet, each major broadcasting group opens its live streams in its own app, for free, in exchange for an account and advertising. I counted channel by channel, at the address, not from a brochure: here is what a household with no TV subscription actually receives, as of 1 October 2026.
| Where you live | By aerial, no internet | By app, with internet | Live channels received for free |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wallonia | La Une, Tipik, La Trois, BRF window | Auvio, RTL play, VRT MAX, VTM GO | 3 by aerial, about 12 by app |
| Brussels | La Une, Tipik, La Trois, BRF window | Auvio, RTL play, VRT MAX, VTM GO | 3 by aerial, about 12 by app |
| Flanders | none | VRT MAX, VTM GO, Auvio, RTL play | 0 by aerial, about 12 by app |
Twelve is an order of magnitude: it adds up the live streams of La Une, Tipik and La Trois on Auvio, of RTL-TVI, Club RTL and Plug RTL on RTL play, of VRT 1, Canvas and Ketnet on VRT MAX, the Flemish public broadcaster's app, and of the VTM channels on VTM GO. No paid sports channel is included, and no film channel either.
Do you need an aerial for DTT in Belgium?
In Wallonia and Brussels, yes, and it has to read DVB-T2 HEVC.
RTBF merged its transmitters onto channel 42 alone and switched to DVB-T2 with HEVC compression at the end of summer 2023. DTT, digital terrestrial television, is the French TNT. A television bought before 2018 rarely reads that standard: you then need a small DVB-T2 HEVC adapter plugged in over HDMI. After that it is free, with no registration and no card.
When I was installing set-top boxes around Namur, the customers who kept an aerial were almost always second homes in the Ardennes or grandparents who refused cable. Many of them called in September 2023, screen black, convinced RTBF had switched off. It had changed standard.
In Flanders, the question no longer arises. VRT ended over-the-air broadcasting on 1 December 2018, and the last paid aerial service, Antenne TV, closed on 1 September 2024. An aerial installed in Ghent or Hasselt no longer picks up a single Belgian channel.
Which free TV apps work in Belgium?
Four Belgian apps, plus one manufacturer's service.
Auvio for RTBF, RTL play for RTL Belgium, VRT MAX for VRT and VTM GO for DPG Media, the Flemish commercial group. All four stream live and on catch-up, and all of them require an account. Samsung TV Plus comes on top of that on the brand's televisions, with no account, but with no Belgian general-interest channel.
Before getting rid of the set-top box, check these points, because they decide how it works day to day:
- one account per app, so four logins to remember for one living room;
- a stable internet connection, around 5 Mbps per HD stream;
- advertising before live streams and during catch-up;
- no recording at all, only catch-up within the window the channel sets;
- a connected television, a streaming stick or a computer, since the app does not exist everywhere.
The last point bites more often than people think. A 2015 Smart TV no longer shows some apps, and the update never comes: the manufacturer has stopped supporting it. A Chromecast or a Fire TV Stick solves the problem for the price of one month of pay TV. The four broadcasters' websites also work in a browser, on a computer, with nothing to install.
Does free TV work from abroad?
Within the European Union, partly. Elsewhere, no.
The European regulation on the cross-border portability of online content services, in force since 1 April 2018, requires a service available at home to remain available during a temporary stay in another member state. Each broadcaster applies it in its own way.
Auvio asks, in the « Accès Auvio en Europe » section of your profile, for a Belgian postal address and a Belgian mobile number, then sends a four-digit code by text message. VRT MAX requires a check of Belgian residence; once done, the live streams of VRT 1, Canvas and Ketnet stay visible across the EU, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, according to VRT's own page. RTL play, outside Belgium and Luxembourg, shows news programmes only.

Are €10-a-year IPTV offers legal?
No.
IPTV technology is legal: Proximus and Orange television also run over the internet. A service reselling thousands of pay channels, sport and films included, without having bought the rights, is illegal. The price alone gives it away. A legal sports option on its own costs more than €20 a month at Belgian operators, and nobody can resell the Pro League, the Champions League and the Netflix catalogue for €10 a year without having stolen them.
The Conseil supérieur de l'audiovisuel, the media regulator of French-speaking Belgium, has been running an information campaign on this since June 2025. In February 2026, at the request of RTL Belgium and RTBF, the Brussels business court ordered internet providers to apply dynamic blocking to several services, consumer association Test-Achats reported on 6 March 2026.
What do you risk with an unauthorised IPTV subscription?
On paper, a lot. In practice, first of all the money you lose.
Belgian law provides for fines of up to €800,000 and five years in prison for copyright infringement, the daily DH recalled on 24 April 2026. The same article states that no individual user had yet been convicted at that date. So I will not tell you the police will ring the bell tomorrow. I will tell you that the anti-piracy unit of the Federal Public Service Economy has had 955 sites blocked in two years, that 115,000 illegal subscribers were identified after raids in Belgium, and that the yearly subscription paid upfront vanishes the day the server goes down. Add a bank card handed to a seller with no address.
How much does the cheapest pay TV cost, for comparison?
€10 a month at the very least, and always with an internet line.
No major Belgian operator sells television on its own to a household that does not also take its internet. Pay TV is a block you add, and its monthly price is read next to the off-promotion rate of the whole bundle.
| Operator | TV formula | Monthly add-on | Off-promotion reference | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Orange | TV Lite, 20 channels, no set-top box | €10 | Orange internet required | 28/08/2026 |
| Base | TV block | €11 | Base internet required | 12/08/2026 (L'Avenir) |
| VOO | TV block | €17 | VOO internet required | 12/08/2026 (L'Avenir) |
| Proximus | TV block with set-top box | €18 | Internet Go + TV at €75.99 | 29/09/2026 |
| Orange | TV block with set-top box | €20 | Orange internet required | 12/08/2026 (L'Avenir) |
Over a year, the Proximus block comes to €216. For that money you get the set-top box, recording and a hundred or so channels, many of which you will never watch. If your evening comes down to the La Une news and one series on RTL-TVI, the free column does the job.
Six situations, six answers

| Flanders, no internet | None | All television |
| Internet at home, recent Smart TV | Auvio, RTL play, VRT MAX, VTM GO on the TV | Sport, films, recording |
| Smart TV too old | Streaming stick or a computer over HDMI | The stick, once |
| Stay in another EU country | Auvio and VRT MAX after verifying a Belgian address | Most RTL programmes |

Frequently asked questions
